WhiteSpace Tai Chi Classes

Classes are in Feckenham Village Hall following the following timetable:

  • Tuesday evenings 6:30pm to 7:30pm

Beginners’ Class

This is the perfect starting point to learn Tai Chi. This is an hour lesson introducing the Eight Movements and basic Qi Gong movements. The class will be led by a qualified instructor in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Improvers Class

This is for graduates of the Eight Movements. This is an hour lesson introducing the Twenty-Four Movements and more advanced Qi Gong movements.

The Yang “Temple” Style

The “Yang” style Eight Movements was designed for the Chinese Government, when their Health Service faced collapse. The Government looked to Tai Chi to improve the health of their citizens. At that time the Tai Chi beginner’s movements consisted of 108 series of movements and took a decade to learn.

Fortunately for us, the Government approached the Head Instructor at the Shaolin Temple; told him the problem and asked for a solution.

Old Monk, as he preferred to be known, designed the “8 Movements” to be easy to learn; provide the practitioner with all the benefits that tai chi brings and to become the bedrock for all subsequent Tai Chi movements.

Unfortunately, before the 8 Movements could be introduced to the general public, the ‘Cultural Revolution’ took place and all martial arts were banned in China.

Luckily for us, my Instructor Peter Fletcher (British Tai Chi Association) achieved the status of master from one of the few masters trained in the Singapore Temple by Old Monk. So, the first thing we teach is the Yang style 8 Movements, before moving on to the 24 movements.

Learning Tai Chi with WhiteSpace

At WhiteSpace, we teach the Yang style of Tai Chi which is the most wildly practised family style. However, we are unique in teaching the original Shaolin style passed down through the generations. This both makes it easier to learn Tai Chi in the beginning, but also ensures your core technique is developed sufficiently before moving on to the harder movements.

As a beginner, you will master the Eight Movements and a number of Qi Gong movements before you progress onto an Intermediate class. As an Intermediate, you will master the 24-Movements and a set of more advanced Qi Gong movements.

WhiteSpace Tai Chi is proudly associated with the The British Tai Chi Association . In fact, our instructor was trained by the Tai Chi Master Peter Fletcher and continues to work with the British Tai Chi Association. We also follow the same teaching style and programs.

Yang style tai chi chuan is an internal martial art that is the second oldest of the five main tai chi styles but is the most widely practiced. Known for its large graceful movements and health benefits, Yang style has several short, long, and weapons forms. It was founded by Yang Luchan in the mid 19th century.
